HISTORY OF THE KANSAS SPEEDWAY

Kansas Speedway is a 1.5-mile tri-oval situated in Kansas City, Kansas, developed by International Speedway Corporation. Construction started in 1999, and the venue officially opened its doors in 2001.

From its early days, the circuit hosted major racing categories including NASCAR, ARCA, and IndyCar, quickly establishing itself as a key motorsport destination in the Midwest. The NASCAR Cup Series debuted at the track on 30 September 2001, where Jeff Gordon claimed the first victory. Just one day later, Eddie Cheever Jr. won the inaugural IndyCar race, while Ricky Hendrick had already secured a place in the track’s history earlier that year with a Truck Series win.

Over time, Kansas Speedway became a regular double-stop on the NASCAR Cup calendar, hosting both a spring and a fall race. The spring event is typically held in May, while the autumn race forms part of the NASCAR Playoffs, increasing the track’s significance in the championship fight. This two-race format has helped the venue produce more memorable moments and play a decisive role late in the season.

The track has built a reputation for tight, unpredictable racing and dramatic finishes. Floodlights were installed in 2011, allowing night racing and enhancing the atmosphere. One of the most notable moments came in 2024, when Kyle Larson narrowly defeated Chris Buescher by just 0.001 seconds – one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history. Among the most successful drivers at Kansas are Jeff Gordon, winner of the first two Cup races, Jimmie Johnson with three victories, and Denny Hamlin, who leads all drivers with four Cup wins at the venue. In recent seasons, Ross Chastain took victory in the 2024 fall race, while Larson added another win in the spring.

Kansas Speedway has also delivered standout moments in the support series. Jeff Green won the first Xfinity Series race in 2001, with later victories going to drivers such as Kyle Busch, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Christopher Bell. In the Truck Series, notable winners include Ricky Hendrick, Kyle Busch, and Corey Heim, who completed a clean sweep of both Kansas races in 2024. In the ARCA competition, Jason Jarrett claimed the inaugural win in 2001, followed in later years by successful drivers such as Frank Kimmel, Alex Bowman, and Ty Gibbs.
