TRAFFIC RULES IN KANSAS

Travelling to Kansas Speedway for the AdventHealth 400 is all about enjoying the race weekend, and being familiar with local driving rules can help make your journey smooth and stress-free.

Driving in Kansas

Across the United States, traffic in Kansas keeps to the right-hand side of the road. If you are not used to this, take extra care at intersections, when exiting parking areas, and when making turns near the Speedway.

Speed limits

Speed limits vary depending on the type of road. In residential areas, limits are typically 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h). On state highways, they usually range from 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h), while interstates can allow speeds of up to 70 mph (113 km/h). Always follow posted signs, as limits may change quickly. Speed enforcement is common, and penalties can be significant.

Traffic lights and intersections

Traffic regulations are strictly enforced. Some intersections are monitored by cameras to detect red-light violations. Turning right on red is generally allowed after a complete stop, unless otherwise indicated. Always give priority to pedestrians and avoid entering an intersection on a late yellow light if you can stop safely.

Alcohol and driving

Drink-driving laws are taken very seriously. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and over, while drivers under 21 are subject to a zero-tolerance policy. Police may carry out checks during major events, including race weekends. If you plan to drink, it is best to arrange alternative transport such as a taxi or rideshare.

Seat belt rules

Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants in the vehicle, regardless of seating position. Failing to comply can result in a fine, so ensure everyone is properly secured before setting off.

Right-of-way and pedestrians

Pedestrians always have priority in crosswalks, and drivers must stop to allow them to pass. At uncontrolled intersections, the first vehicle to arrive has the right of way. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, priority is given to the vehicle on the right. Around the Speedway, expect increased foot traffic and drive accordingly.

If you are stopped by the police

If signalled to pull over, remain calm and indicate to the right. Stop in a safe location, ideally somewhere visible and well-lit. Keep your hands in view, stay courteous, and follow the officer’s instructions.
